Corporate bank account in Dubai: banks and requirements

How to open a corporate bank account in Dubai: KYC requirements, documents, realistic timelines and how to prepare a file the bank will approve.

LorcaBase · Corporate bank account opening in Dubai

Setting up the company is the quick part; the corporate bank account is where it is decided whether your Dubai company can actually operate. UAE banks apply strict KYC and anti-money-laundering controls, and they approve files — not forms. On this page we explain which banking options exist, what the bank asks for, how long it really takes and how we prepare each application to maximise the probability of approval.

01

Why the account is the critical step (not the licence)

The licence is issued in days; the account goes through the bank’s compliance department, which assesses the activity, the shareholders, the countries of operation and the source of funds. A company without an account cannot invoice normally, receive client payments or pay salaries and suppliers.

The most common mistake is treating the account as an afterthought. We approach it the other way round: the banking profile is designed before incorporation — choosing a licence activity, jurisdiction and structure that a bank can approve without friction.

02

Banking options for companies in the UAE

  • Local banks — the main option for operating in the country: AED and multi-currency accounts, full online banking, cards and financing once you have a track record. They usually require the signatory’s presence and value residency.
  • International banks present in the UAE — useful for groups with multi-country operations and high volumes; their entry requirements tend to be higher.
  • Digital and payment institutions — faster, more remote onboarding for eligible profiles; they work well as an initial operating account or a complement, with limits depending on licence and activity.

The choice is not “the best bank”, but the bank whose risk policy fits your activity, your countries and your structure.

03

Requirements and documents: what compliance assesses

The standard file includes:

  • Corporate documentation — licence, articles or memorandum, register of shareholders and the structure down to the ultimate beneficial owner (UBO).
  • Identity of shareholders and signatories — passports and, where they exist, residence visas and Emirates ID.
  • The activity explained — what you sell, to whom, from where, with which suppliers and what volumes you expect in the first twelve months.
  • Documented source of funds — where the initial capital comes from and where the receipts will come from.
  • Substance — an office or flexi desk, residency of at least one signatory, contracts or letters of intent where clients already exist.

Consistency matters more than volume: what the company invoices must match the licence activity and what was declared to the bank.

04

Realistic timelines

With a complete file and a clear profile, the opening is usually resolved in 2 to 4 weeks. International structures, non-resident shareholders or higher-risk sectors can take 4 to 8 weeks or more, sometimes with additional rounds of questions from the bank. Submitting an incomplete application speeds up nothing: every correction restarts the compliance queue.

05

Why applications get rejected (and how we prevent it)

Rejections are almost always explained by one of these reasons:

  1. Licence–activity mismatch — the licence says one thing and the expected invoices another.
  2. Lack of substance — no residency, no office, no track record and no ties to the UAE.
  3. Weak source of funds — capital that cannot be traced with documents.
  4. Sensitive sector or payment corridor — activities and countries that require specific banks and more documentation.
  5. Improvised file — inconsistent answers to the bank’s questions.

Our job is to eliminate those reasons before submitting the application: we review the licence, prepare the activity narrative with its supporting documents, and choose the right institutions for the profile instead of burning attempts.

06

How we manage it at LorcaBase

  1. Banking profile analysis — activity, shareholders, countries, currencies and volumes; we identify the viable banks and the order in which to apply.
  2. File preparation — corporate documents, KYC for shareholders and UBO, source of funds and the activity description in the format compliance expects.
  3. Submission and follow-up — we coordinate appointments, answer the bank’s questions and handle corrections until approval.
  4. Getting up and running — online banking, cards, users and the connection with your accounting and tax registrations, including Corporate Tax.

If you have not incorporated yet, even better: we design your company formation with the banking route decided from day one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to open a corporate account in Dubai?

It depends on the bank and the profile: straightforward cases with a resident shareholder and a clear activity are usually resolved in 2 to 4 weeks; profiles with an international structure, a regulated activity or non-resident shareholders can take 4 to 8 weeks or more. The timeline is set by the bank's compliance department, not by the application form.

Do I have to travel to Dubai to open the account?

Most traditional banks require at least one in-person visit by the signatory for verification. Some digital institutions allow remote processes depending on the profile. We confirm this bank by bank before starting the application.

Why do banks reject accounts for new companies?

The most common causes: a licence activity that does not match what is being invoiced, lack of substance (no office, no residency, no track record), poorly documented source of funds, higher-risk sectors and incomplete files. Almost all of them can be prevented by preparing the file before applying.

Can I open an account without being a UAE resident?

It is possible but harder: most local banks prioritise companies with at least one signatory holding a residence visa and Emirates ID. Without residency, the options narrow to certain institutions and profiles. That is why we usually coordinate account and visa as a single process.

What documents does the bank ask for?

At a minimum: licence and corporate documents, passports (and visas/Emirates ID where they exist) of shareholders and signatories, a description of the activity with expected clients and suppliers, evidence of the source of funds and, where available, banking history or statements from the previous company.

Can a personal account be used to run the company?

No. Mixing company receipts with a personal account creates banking compliance, accounting and Corporate Tax problems. The company must operate through its own corporate account from the start.

Which bank is right for me?

It depends on the activity, the countries you operate with, the currencies, the volumes and the shareholders' profile. We work with local banks, international banks and digital institutions present in the UAE, and we propose the route with the highest probability of approval for each case — not a single bank for everyone.
